History:
It was soggy on that May 5th afternoon Crina gave birth to a litter of two in 2005. Tzedef was out hunting when his son and daughter were born, and returned to discover one of his kits was a still born. Denali was the one to survive, and was thus given the a name meaning "The Great One" in hopes that she would have a long, healthy life. Her loner parents were wrong in their prediction, for everything went down hill when the kit turned six months old. Up until the sixth month mark Denali had lived happily with her mother and father. She was perfectly sane and normal for those first few months of her life. She'd play and explore under the watch of her mother and learn essential survival skills from her father. Unfortunately, she wandered too from her mother on a November evening, and was never seen by her parents again.
While out exploring, she managed to get her foot caught in a twoleg hunting trap. She struggled to free herself for two hours before two boys appeared. The youngest was eight, while the other was twleve. The boys took pity on the helpless cat and freed her from the trap. Unfortunately, that freedom only meant they picked Denali up, cut her leg free, and carried her to their home. The younger boy wanted to keep her as a pet. Denali was with the humans for three days. The mother wasn't fond of having a stray animal in the house, and on the thrid day of the poor kit's stay she dropped her off at the local pound. The boys had been in school at the time, and when they returned their mother told them that she had run off.
The pound terrified Denali, and she spent much of her time cowering in a corner of her cage and hissing at anyone who looked at her. All she wanted was to return to the wild. Instead, a sleezy looking man adopted her and then sold her to an animal test facility in the span of a week.
Denali was now close to seven months old. She was kept in a small cage near various other animals. She, along with the other animals, were injected with a strange serum and then closely observed by the scientists. The injections were daily and contained methamphetamine (MAP). They were given to the animals in small doses over several months, and slowly each animal's sanity began to slip farther and farther away. This was the case for Denali. The MAP permanently damaged Denali's mind, leaving her with many symptoms similar to the human disease of schizophrenia. She would relapse into babbling trances and there were times it seemed she was on some sort of caffine high despite the fact that all she was fed was water and raw meat twice a day. She would also experience lows in which she became highly agressive and did her best to attack anyone who came near her.
After she managed to sink her teeth into three different scientists, the humans decided that the best thing for her was to 'put her to sleep.' The plan was to gas her, but she managed to escape on the way to the chamber. She slipped out of one of the rookie scientist's hands, and out into the hallway. Denali ran to the closest door, and with the help of some animal rights activists that had conviently been protesting that day, miraculously managed to escape with her life. She was returned to the wild, far from her original home, and found herself alone in the mountains, not too far from the clans. By then she was two years old, having been trapped in that aweful captivity for a year and a half of her life. Alone and mentally incapacitated, Denali had no one to turn to. She spent the next year and a half of her life wandering on her own as a loner. Most feared getting close to her, prefering to ridicule her from afar. She forgave them for their actions though, knowing everyone feared and lashed out against what they didn't understand. She was one of those nonunderstandable things, afterall, forced to wander alone with broken sanity.
Personality: Denali's sanity is not completely intact. She can go for long periods of time appearing completely normal. She is prone, however, to falling into a trance-like state accompanied by incessant babbling. She also experiences extreme highs in which she is overly jumpy and jittery, having the appearance of a hyper kit in an adult's skin. She is a rather paranoid creature, and the diagnosis for her mental dissabilities would be schizophrenia.
Her paranoia is probably the worst of her symptoms. It is the only symptom that affects her on a daily basis. Denali constantly fears that someone or something is out to get her, and is therefore skittish at every unusual sound or movement. It is to the point that snowflakes are enough to send her into a fit of terror until she realizes that it's only snow. Of course she also has her aggresive streaks, that can really be triggered by anything of anyone. The other time's, she is just plain crazy. Complete with babbling nonsence, and hyserically laughing.
Questionable sanity aside, Denali is really a sweetheart. She's very affectionate and, if she were lacking the paranoia, would willingly approach anyone. When around those she knows she can become very talkative, posessing quite a few traits of a gossip. A very friendly creature, she finds it hard to dislike anyone and rarely judges on first appearances. She knows others tend to shy away from her, especially after witnessing one of her fits. While she should be upset about such treatment, she can't help forgiving those that don't take the time to understand her. She never has and never will harbor a grudge with anyone. It's just not in her original nature to be ill-tempered, despite all the abuse she has put up with.
Of course she does have her bad side, and it's only intensified by her illness. Though uncommon, she does experience extreme low emotional periods. During these times she is highly irritable. Even a friendly hello is enough to cause her to growl, and during these times she goes out of her way to avoid others. She seems to always be on edge, and is likely to get herself into some sort of fight during these times. When she returns to her sane state, an intense guilt tends to overwhelm her, regrets of her harsher actions plaguing her mind for several days. The depression in this state really rips her apart.
Overall, Denali is very aware of her own mental states. She understands why others try to avoid her despite her attempts to be friendly. She is aware of when she is doing something wrong but lacks the ability to stop the action. She knows her state of constant fear is rediculous, and yet she can't help it. The only thing she doesn't understand is the trance-like state she sometimes goes into. She knows why it scares others away, but she does not know why she becomes immobile for periods of time, spouting nothing but nonsense. Vowed to never fall in love, since the one time she did was terrible and he broke her heart. Yet maybe it would be good for her... Changes her name to Shatteredheart once she finds the clans, and thinks it fits her very well in a twisted way.
