The early dawn landscape was covered in a blanket of frost. Barely any shrubs escaped the freezing grasp that an early winter had on the land. It was so white, the leaves that were left on the almost bare trees that were beginning to brown, seemed alive against the cold background. In the icy hills, a small river, but not a creek, flowed down the lumpy foothills of the mountains they rested on. The stream twisted across the hills, getting down any way it could, a fast undercurrent keeping it from freezing. The flow of water ended underneath a great oak tree when it cascaded from the mouth of a small cavern that opened in the hillside. The tree, cave, and pond were hidden by many fallen boulders that must have been there for centuries. It's in this pool that the river ended, where our story begins; in that frozen pond. ****
The black kit skittered across the cold, dew-laden grass frantically trying to keep her paws off the chilly ground. Her dark head that bobbed barely above the tall grass of the meadow was inconspicuously seen; she was a radical contrast to the frost around her. The only thing that matched the surroundings were her clear, electric blue eyes that matched the indigo parts of the sky that weren't filled with the colors of sunrise.
The she-kit, after a of hopping and running, eventually took shelter in the entrance of a small cavern. As she curled up in the front, she really noticed the scenery around her. There was a giant oak, for one. She was sure that if she ever stayed here long enough, she would climb it. However, the chances of her staying anywhere for more than a few days was rare. The other thing she noticed was a frozen pool. However, it was really the pool she noticed, but the squirrel on it. The squirrel was walking along the other edge, but on top of the pool, seemingly looking for something.
It wasn't like the kit really wanted to hunt the squirrel. No, she had no idea how to hunt; she generally scavenged, coming upon an injured creature here and there. What she was really interested in was how the squirrel was walking on the water. The kit, born in the beginning of green-leaf, had never seen water frozen before. So, the thought of being able to walk on water are the thoughts that spurred the dumb decision to come.
The black kitten skipped up the the edge of the pond. She crouched on the edge, sniffing at the frozen surface. Slowly extending a paw out, she gently touched the surface. The cold and stickiness stung, but she kept it there, adjusting. Finally, when she felt she was ready. She lowered her whole body onto the icy surface. Taking small steps she began to skate along the surface. Soon she was near the middle. As the solid, not slippery ground fell further and further away, a sense of fear latched in her heart. Fearfully, she grappled with the ice, trying to grasp it's slippery surface desperately. When it seemed hopeless, she finally latched on. That's when she heard the first crack. The next thing she knew, she was being plunged into icy darkness.

The frost had come on time that year, although the cold was something the dark brown and black tom had always loved. Maybe it had been something about his homeland always having been cold, that he had better felt at home in it. Dimitri had just been comming out of his den to enjoy the colors of the frosty sunset. It was so rare that he was up early enough to see it, not that he was a heavy sleeper. It was that just for once, he had been without apprentice to train. It was rare, as the wise warrior usually was with someone. It had just been the role he had taken upon him, to give something back to the wolrd that had made him as strong and deadly as he was know. Two brwon, almost black eyes, had been just wandering when he saw, and then heard, the first cracks into the ice. And of course, he saw the ebony kit that had fallen in.
Instantly, he raced toward the pond, long strides taking him across the frozen land fast. The ice was slippery, and several times he had almost fallen himself. Training with the ice had helped though, and he had fixed himself before he would fall. One second would be all it would take to have the kit die in the icy waters. It took only minutes for the bone cold to set in, and then death was almost positive. Dimitri had been lucky, he had escaped it the one time he had slipped and fell through the ice. It had been a close call, one that he had never wanted to repeat. Taking a deep breath though, he knew he would need to if he was to save the kit. So much for enjoying the day. The ice hhole had widened up a lot, not even half way to the center and it was there. Effortlessly, hte large tom leap[t and sailed across closer to where the kit was. He hit the water with a splash...
The icy cold seemed to almost paralyze the tom for a moment as it seemed to pull the heat out of him. Only did the burning of his lungs bring the tom to the surface to breath. Strong strokes had him dart through the water, and the tom grabbed the kit in his maw. The weight of both of their wet fur was making havoc as he drew breath from the icy air. It seemed to burn his lungs as bad as the water had when he had just jumped in. Shoulder muscles churing in the frigid water, the tom heaved them both up to shore, spitting out the foul taste of the frozen water. Already, ice was starting to form on their pelts. They would need to dry themselves faste if they wanted to keep the ice off. The kit had not stirred yet though. Dimitri knew he had to get the blood flowing, and was glad for his training.
Quickly, he began to rub the kit's chest, trying to get it to breath. That was the best way he knew to keep the blood flowing, but prevent the ice from licking. Dimitri's own pelt was still slightly frozen, but it wouldn't be too hard for him to clean himself up. Finally, he let go of the kit, and shook his head. Why was a kit on the pond anyways? Squirrles were a lot lighter then them, that was why they could walk on the thin ice. It seemed that this kit hadn't known that though. Absently, the black and brown tom began to clean his own pelt, dark brown eyes still watching the kit.

The kit had lost all senses in the frozen darkness. However, she did feel the tug on her ruff. She felt the water swivel around her as she was moved through the water. In her unconscious she was having nightmares. She was freezing cold. That was true. A huge wave was crashing on her and she was moving with the wave, and it didn't stop. Soon, she believed that she was stuck in a whirlpool. However, all the water had vanished now she was just a frozen leaf in a block of ice... ****
The kit spluttered and coughed weakly as warmth surged into her cold body. Every breath she took was painful and cracked. She was alive, though. Her eyes, which had been closed, opened. Though her body was wet and bedraggled, her eyes were still the pure, electric blue they always were, standing out in contrast against her black pelt.
Everything around her seemed blurry, or maybe it was just all moving around her. It felt like she was stuck in a daze. She tried to stretch her paws, and tapped her tail in an upset way. The kit, eventually, closed her eyes again, took a deep breath, then opened them once more. Everything was a lot clearer this time. She stared at the tom above her long and hard, her icy blue eyes seeming to burrow into his soul. Finally, she rolled over and stood up on wobbly legs.
"Why does everything feel so...numb?" She asked, shaking her paws, and beginning to lick and dry down her wet fur. "Who are you?"

The eyes were something new to the dark brown and black swirled tom. He hadn't seen that shade of blue anyways. It was if it could look through someone, and read their deepest darkest secrets. It was a bit intresting to the tom. His deep brown eyes, the same shade aas the brown of his pelt, met hers with ease. Eye contact was something he had always done. It was a sign of beong comfortable, and for the moment, Dimitri was somewhat comfortable. He had never really been comfortable really though. Aside from the occasional apprentice, he had always been a true loner. He had never really looked for the company of others, and was always glad to hole up and just live life on his own.
"Your probably going into, or are in, Shock. That water was very cold." He said simply. He didn't ask what she had been doing on the ice though, he knew she would tell him if she wanted. Dimitri was never one to pry. "I am Dimitri. Who might you be?" He asked in a polite tone. His pelt was almost all the way dry now, he had been lucky to get it that way. It didn't absorb water too much really.

The she-cat examined the tom. Everything from his brown pelt to chocolate brown eyes. He seemed well muscled, strong, and fast. He also seemed to be a loner. She could tell from his voice. It was just the way loners spoke. Or maybe she was just remembering the way her mother used to speak before she left her. ****
"No. I don't feel shocked." The kit said a little distantly, licking her paw and swiping it over her head, "No. Just cold...a little shaken..." The black cat shook herself and shivered. She looked at the pond, broken chunks of icy roving atop the surface lazily. She turned away quickly, scowling. Last time she tried to walk on ice.
She turned back to Demitri, her eyes holding all her annoyance. The irritated feelings weren't directed at anyone in particular, but herself. She had been pretty stupid, naive, and childish. Those were the exact things her mother had warned her to not do before she left. She sighed. Breaking rules again. This is why she had been abandoned in the first place.
"Nice to meet you, Demitri." She dipped her head politely, "I'm, eh...uh..." had she forgotten her own name in these few moons of solitude? Well, her mother hadn't really spoken her name that much. Frankly, how was she supposed to remember. The vision of the icy pond still lingered in her mind. She might as well get a new one. One that she could remember. "Name's Frozen."

"Maybe you've just been shaken." The dark tabby tom said with a shrug. He really didn't know what you would call he. He thought it would be shock, but maybe it wasn't. It had been cold water, and although they hadn't been in too long, there could be something bad behind it. There usually was when falling through ice. You got that sudden rush of cold, one that always seemed to freeze all of your senses. It was always give and take if you tried to walk on ice. It all depended on the elements. Not that he ever planned to try it unless the ice seemed firm, and it was needed. His expression, as usual it seemed, was netrual. Nothing shocked him too often, and he hid everything well.
"Nice to meet you as well, Frozen." He said simply, only the faintest russian accent hinting of where he had come from. It was rare to her it with him, but every now and then it just seemed to opop. He missed home, that much was true, but Dimitri thought to himself, he had not a bad life here. He wasn't really bothered by anyone aside from the ones he took in for a short time, and everything was rather calm. Solitude had never hurt the dark tabby tom really. If only, it just made him a little more distant then other cats really.

((Frozen.))
Frozen shook her pelt, an agitated look on her face. It seemed that everything Demetri was saying was passing right through one ear and out the other. Being a kit, she tended to lose interest easily. However, she was almost out of kithood. "Water...water...water." she groaned, rolling her eyes. "It shouldn't be this cold already!" She huffed, a shiver passing down her spine. "So, where do we go now?" Her mind wandered from one subject to the next. Finally it ended on the next destination. The she-cat had already decided that she would stick with Demetri; if he liked it or not.

((Whoops. Sorry about that.))
A rare smiled flickered for a moment over Dimitri's features. That rare smile always changed his features in a strange way. Probably because of the fact that it was so rare. Laughter was ever more rare, and less heard. Eyes drifting over to see the sun had made its full climb to the top of the sky, Dimitri ran over what he had started out wanting to do before he had come across Frozen. It really wasn't much of a list. "I was going to go hunting. If you want to come of not, its up to you." He ended with a shrug. He would give her the choice he had given everyone else, to be able to come or leave. It was always that way, he would not take away any choice he had the power not to. Making sure his pelt was dry, Dimitri began to move off, making what he said clear. If she was not going to follow, he was not going to make her.

Frozen smiled back at Demetri. She loved smiles. She had never seen them much when she was a kit, but once she was on her own, she'd seen them on other animals and cats. They always seemed to make her smile or lift her heart a bit. If the world was really only made of chaos and fear, then maybe smiles were their only hope. "I'd love to come with you!" she exclaimed happily. She'd been so lonely lately. She acted like it hadn't bothered her, but that was the problem. The longer she had pretended she was happy, the more unhappy she became. She needed company. She hated to be alone and she hoped she would never be as alone as she had been again. Suddenly, she looked down though. She shuffled her paws nervously. The grass was slick with dew, the frost all melted. "I don't know how to hunt." she said in shame. She was was probably the only cat her age in the world who didn't know how to hunt! She averted her eyes, feeling stupid.

Surpise flecked the deep chocolate orbs of Dimitri. For her age, the tom would have thought she would have known how to hunt. Frozen didn't appear to be skinny from not eating. Dimitri shrugged to himself. Being used to teaching others had taught the tom a lot of things about life. Like, not to question what was given to you but to take it in acceptance anyways. "That can be fixed." He said simply, watching his pawsteps a bit more as the ground became slicker from the already melting frost. How fast things changed. Parting his jaws slightly, Dimitri drew in the scents all around him. The prey was sluggish from the cold today, a good time to hunt. A couple more seconds in searching, Dimitri found a rabbit that wasn't too sluggish. "I know you said you didn't know how I hunt, but I need to see what you do know. There is a rabbit over in the bushes. Try and catch it." He instructed. Early evaluation was something important. "And don't worry about mistakes, I just want to see what you know." Dimitri said in a quiet tone, so not to scare off the prey. Settling back on his haunches, Dimitri waited for Frozen to make her move. There would be no instructions yet from him, that much was clear by his posture.

Frozen looked at Demetri in alarm at first. She had to try and catch it? She had no chance! She licked her lips nervously and tried to put on a determined face. How could she know how to hunt? She had never seen anyone hunt. well, she had seen coyotes hunt from a distance. However, at those times they had been hunting her. She tried to follow their example. She crouched down and aimed her body towards the bushes the rabbit was in. She took a step towards it, rubbing her belly to the ground. The wet grass sent unpleasant tingles up her back. She shut her eyes and blocked out the wet feeling and concentrated hard before opening her eyes. Suddenly, she bust out into a run. This was how the Coyotes did it, right? Frozen would just add a cat move at the end. It would work perfectly. She went faster and faster as she hurdled towards the bush. Suddenly, when she though she was close enough, she leaped. As her body began to lift off the ground, she was immediately tugged back. Not with a lack of pain either. She let out a squeak of pain. Her back paw had caught under a root, yanking her back. As she smacked back to the ground she watched the rabbit scurry away through the tall grass, it's fluffy tail bobbing up and down as it hopped like it was walking on fire until she could see it no more. As she got up and shook the dew off her black pelt. She frowned and looked apolegetically over her shoulder at Demetri.

Over all, it was not a bad attempt, Dimitri thought as he watched Frozen attempt to hunt. At least she had actually tried, and almost gotten, what she had been after. Her posture reminded him of something though, it lurked at the corner of his mind, not comming out of the shadows though. He shrugged and let it go. If it was really important, he reasoned with himself, it would have shown. Getting up, Dimitri walked over to Frozen. "Not bad, if there hadn't been the root you could have gotten it." He said in a soft tone. Already, his senses were flickering to the surrounding bushes, looking for something to hunt. Ah, there it was, a fat vole that was looking for some last winter substance before holing up. "You need to start with the crouch" He started, sinking down into one. "Making sure nothing brushes or makes a loud noise as you stalk your prey" He said in the same low tone as he moved closer towards the vole "And making sure there is nothing around to hinder you, you pounce." With that Dimitri lept and landed strait onto the vole, nipping it on the back of the neck in one fluid motion. Picking it up, he moved out of the little bush clearing he had stalked the vole into, and dropped it. He had caught his prey, and now was going to show her the correct way to get into a hunter's crouch again. "Now, let me see what your hunter's crouch looks like." He said, after slipping back out of the one he had been showing her.
