Total was standing at the edge of the cliff, her claws curling over the side. She didn't know who had seen er leave, or if they were going to do nything about it. What she did know was that she had to decide. She could lean forward and die, or she could turn and live.
She stood for a long time, then turned around and walked back a few feet. Then she lay on the ground and curled up.
She was in a different place. Somewhere that seemed faintly familiar. Total gasped as faces surrounded her. "Don't do it." Nanuk said, her white pelt melting into the ground. "If its what you want..." Plus said, then the ground swallowed her up. Total turned and ran, but she didn't remember this place well. Every turn, ever step was killing her. Finally she skidded to a stop, and let herself fall.
Howling in fright, Totals eyes snapped open. Suddenly, as if the howl had shattered the glass window that kept the pain, the cries, the fear, and everything she had been holding back, Total started to shake. She couldn't do anything about the pain the overflowed her heart. She couldn't tell if the pain was real or not, but she wanted to die. She let out a howl, but it was useless. I will never heal. she though franticly. I can't. I won't. she shook her head franticly, and fell to the ground. She lay, frozen, barley breathing, as the pain from the entire year overflowed and drowned her. Total didn't fight it, how could she? It washed over her, and for now, she was at peace. She lay there, not sure if she was dead or dying, but the pain felt... good. She had never let herself look at it like relief. Her problems were overflowing, that was what it was. As if to help her choice, Total could see everything flash past her eyes.
Suddenly a loud howl peirced the sound of rain and thunder. "Oh no." Richie said faintly. More howls rose into the air. Boudler raced in, gasping and panting. Divide's eyes widened when she saw a bullet wound in his shoulder. "Nanuk. Richie." he said, still breathing hard. "The humans are here. And they have..." he winced. "They have guns. Get the pups and leave." he said faintly. Then he fell to the ground, and his body lay still. He was dead.
Rain pelted down on Divide's fur. She howled, trying to find her brother and sister. They replied, but far, far off. All night she howled and howled. Until finally, there was no reply.
Total looked back. Her throat was dry. "None of you would understand." she choked out, trying to dodge past the others to escape. She knew she didn't have a chance with Sandstone. Verblassen was perrty, mysterious, calm, kind, and gentle, and she could speak German. Total was just a skinny, sad, little orphan. No one would ever want her. Especially not Sandstone. Not when he had Verblassen.
Total stared at Sandstone, not sure what to do. "Why don't you just say it then?" she said. "Why don't you stop torturing me like this, and just tell me you love Verblassen more than me?" she said, no emotion in her voice. "Then I can be on way. I'll be out of your way and you won't have to worry about me anymore."
Total wanted to cry, but she couldn't. She stood up, hardly remembering who she was. She stood at the edge of the cliff once again, looking down at the dizzying drop. She stood like a statue at the edge, her eyes searching for something she would never find.
