Nanuk was quite old, truthfully. She had outlived all of her siblings, and even her father. The white wolf appeared quite young, but not today. As snow swirled down in tornados of white, covering the earth with white dust, the old female lay in her Den with her daughter. She didn't look well. Nanuks white fur seemed to be pale, and it had lost its shine, and her eyes seemed distant. He breathing was ragged, and each heartbeat took effort.
Plus stood over her. "Is there anything I can get for you?" she asked quietly, afriad of the answer.
Nanuks old face broke into a small smile. "No, my daughter." she said, her voice cracking with effort. "Everyone has their time to leave this world and walk among the dead." she whispered.
Plus whined sadly. "But theres time..." she trailed off despretley.
Nanuk laughed slightly "You have much faith, my dear." she said quietly. "But I'm afraid there isn't much time for me. I know my time is near." she said fraily.
"No." Plus replied simply, her eyes watering.
"The time is now, Plus. You can't stop it. I've had a good life, a happy life. Its time for me to sleep." Nanuk said gently.
"You can't."
Nanuk smiled, her frail heart finally giving out. And so the old she-wolf closed her eyes to begin her eternal sleep, and out in the cold, white night, a howl of anguish echoed off the mountains, curving around the edges and falling over cliffs to the ears of many.
