Melody eased her way through the secret tunnel, her eyes whispering a name she had not heard since her brash departure. She slunk under the low, dirt roof, and glanced around the room, eyes dialted in the darkness. A soft word attempted to escape her mouth, but was caught in her throat. She had not spoken or even tried to since she left. Life had become a trying, day-by-day experience without the one she loved.
In her absence, he'd become a leader. How could she ever expect him to still feel for her what she felt for him? And even yet, what would his group think of her? Was Renegade still haunting the caverns?
"Zane...."
She whispered his name, honey to her mouth, sweet to a parched tounge.
"I've missed you."

One could assume that nothing had changed about the onyx tom, who at in the shadows, just watching. To the casual bystander, one who had only seen the tom, it was as if nothing had ever changed. Until you looked closer, that is. But only one could have ever been able to see behind that hard mask. And the memory was still sharp in his mind, of when he had sent her away.
His name seemed to be whispered through the tunnel he had been watching, trying to figure out when Renegade was going to attack CresentClan. It was one of the few tunnels that had little activity for the other rogues currently. As the form glid past him, his eyes narrowed into slits to hide their fierce golden glow, it was as though a jolt went through him. Everything about this cat was just like the one he had sent away. At the moment, he dared not to even think her name, in fear of the pain it would send. Yet, there could be no other one...
Like a ghost, he suddenly appeared behind the she cat, golden eyes blazing slightly, even though there was no light to be seen in the tunnels. Why had she come back? Questions like that swarmed his mind, although his posture remained relaxed, and netrual.
"Melody..." He said ever so softly, his voice soft. For a moment, there was only silence between the two. And for the first time, Zane found that he really didn't know what to say. Never before had anyone gotten close to him before. This was a whole new world to the tom.
"I've missed you too." He said in a low tone.
Words were lost for the tom, so he waited for the reaction from Melody. All the times he had been so dark, he had been thinking of her. Now that she was back, her descion about him would either break the tom, or help heal up the wounds caused by this kithood.

Thoughts, even words, lingered in her mind behind a baracade of hesitation and doubt. Melody's ears flattened slightly, her yellow eyes cast to the ground in wonder. A grave thought tried to push it's way into her thoughts, a bold of deadening electricity, frightful visions of loss. She could not hide from her changed, gloomy eyes, a sort of new growing light. Only the whispers of her lost mate could return her once bright gaze out of it's previous shade of ash.
"Do you...Are you.."
Words choked back in her throat. She could not get them out without a difficult struggle. Why was it so hard to speak with the only one she would speak with? Melody laughed slightly.
"I'm sorry. Cat's got my tongue... It looks like you've made me so overcome with emotion I can't even hold out a whole sentence! Well, I mean, besides what I'm saying currently..."
Obvious nervousness haultered her words. Would he feel the same?

The change was very sudden, and even from his slightly sideways view of Melody, it was obvious to the ever observant tom. Their very change made a lead ball seem to fall in his stomach. She had someone else, didn't she? That is what she had come back to tell him, but only hadn't been able to find the words too. He should have seen this coming. Everyone he had ever gotten close to before had all hurt him somehow, why couldn't he just stop trying? He should have learned that he was not wanted by anyone, no matter how much they may like him. All these emotions he kept in himself, hidden from the cats who respected him. In truth, they had been hidden from everyone.
While she wasn't exactly startled to see him appear, she was obviously at a loss for words, as he was too. For anyone else, Zane would have kept quiet, just listening while they spoke. It was a habit of his, to observe and make little notice of himself. It was what had kept him alive deep within the tunnels as Renegade had plotted out loud, giving him the advantage of being ahead of the other rogue leader. Words wanted to burst from him though, to tell her what he felt. However, what could he say? Already he was at a fumble. Maybe it would be just best to speak his mind, like he had done before everything had happened.
A faint amused look seemed to flicker in his eyes, before flashing away. This was a very suspensful time for the both of them it seemed, there was no reason to be amused.
"At least you can speak easier then I. Other then dealing with battle plans, I have spoken little to anyone the moons that you have been gone."
It seemed to be impossible for him to speak about the gentle tone he was using. It was said to have a soothing effect, like when dealing with a startled horse, but at the moment, Zane felt as though every nerve was on fire, just by being in the same tunnel as the only she cat he had ever cared for.

A deep breath, A shallow release of her pounding head. Melody poured out her innermost thoughts, flooding herself of the poison her own mind had bathen her with since her every bitter, lonely thought.
"We are not strangers to each other, and I shall not treat this conversation as if we are. Our every thought is sheltered beyong words and for StarClan's sake it's time it was let out! Every day without you has been an infinite of silence and dark thoughts. I walked to forest alone, loving you enough to obey what you thought for my safety but I have realized love is not obedience! It's fighting, even if it means against yourself. I could not fight this will any longer. I had to come home, Zane, to you. I loved you, and I still love you. Whether or not your feelings have change mattered not to my homecoming. I needed to tell you the agony I am in without you. So tell me now your true feelings so I may end this torture by my eternal happiness or my death. You who once spoke so fluently and elegantly are bound by a silence I know naught how to break. I do not know what to say, nor what to think of how you've changed only that I will always love you even if you became just like Renegade I swear I am yours and yours alone. Now tell me how I must end my torment."

It was like a floodgate. As the currents that already flowed within were now raging currents, suddenly seemed to just tear down whatever had been holding the tom back, to give him freedom of speech, and for once, freedom of mind. The thoughts that had occured were like a posion to his soul, drowning him in misery with every new thought, every memory that turned inside of him. And how good it felt, to be able to speak without hesitation, for fear of being judged for what he said.
"Renegade, and cats like that, are the very bane of my existance. I can assure you, that although I may be what I am, I will never allow myself, nor would I think you would either, to be as cruel as Renegade."
Zane started off, emotion making his words seeming to dance with the faint accent he always spoke with, more noticable when he was actually trying to get something out.
"We have never been strangers to each other. Even from the first time I had met you, I had the feeling that I have always known you, as if you were the unseen childhood friend I had always needed, but until now, never found. You do not know the past that has forever haunted me, although you may have some indications. Being around you though helps ease those memories, to help me forget what I have seen, and what I have done. Every day when you were gone, the dark memories threatened to overlap me, to drag me under. Yet, as much as I was burdened as well as grieving for you, I knew that you would be safer away from Renegade, away from the slaughter that has occured in this forest. I loved you, and still do, to send you away, no matter what the cost, emotionally, mentally, or whatever else, to try and keep you safe. You speak of agony, something I always have been able to relate to. The agony I felt though, as I watched your form as it left this land, was nothing compared to what I have felt in the past. If there is to be any redemption for me in this world, then you are to be my only hope for it. There is no other who I have cared about so much. Some may wish for my heart, some who think that they have succeeded in that factor, but you are mine alone, be it in the legendary eternal happiness, or through the death of my soul, should you have chosen someone else. I will forever be with you, and I will forever love you, should you give me that chance..."
He was baring his soul, or what was left of it, to her. Somehow, Zane had broken another one of his laws. His past had always been something kept in the dark, although it was the whole reason he did what he did. He had hinted at something, and just to keep her here, Zane would speak of anything. The feeling of bliss, as though fire was quenched by water, was almost overwhelming. There never could be another, not as long as he lived...

Melody laid her tail to his speaking lips, silencing him.
"Shhh."
She wished only to comfort the soul she loved, caring for him deeply.
"Speak of it never again. I have never found another, and never will for I am yours always. Let us forget the pain of loss, and the agony of the past it brings. I am home now, and you are well. What else matters, lovely Zane?"
She stood quiet, standing in his scent, overcome by what she had missed. Happiness danced on her eyes, shocking them into a sun-yellow. She has missed him so! It was as if even the colors were brighter now.
"Oh...What has happened with the world? Has Renegade gone?"

There was a small, half smile as the tail flicked over his maw, and he watched as Melody's eyes beamed that oh so familiar sun yellow. For now, it seemed that no matter what happened in this world, everything would be fine. How strange the power of love is, but it healed what can not be seen, nor said. Just like a giant band aid really.
"Nothing. Everything can easily be forgotten, as long as there is hope and promise"
It felt that the weight of the world as he knew it was no longer standing on just his shoulders alone. That he had not need to worry about what would happen should he fail with Renegade, as there would always be one to help him with the burden he carried.
"PewterClan was driven out of their home as we had planned. Renegade does still rule the tunnels, and PewterClan at this moment, but nearly all of the rogues have joined up with me to bring him down. Our spies say that Renegade plans to attack CresentClan soon as well. That will be where he falls. PewterClan is on decent terms with us, and we already have the battle plan. Renegade will regret the day he chose to do what he has done."
Zane finished darkly, eyes narrowing slightly, as though he could already see everything that was going to happen. It would not be much longer now, and he would finally be gone.
"What of you though? Did you ever find your family?"

Melody's eyes grew cloudy for a moment, before the prescence of Zane besides her shook her from the momentary trauma.
"Yes, I found my family. All of them have been slayed but my nephew. I do not know what happened to them, or have any wish to find out. But it's going to be okay. After all, you're my family now."
She gave a feeble smile, realizing the impact of her words. She'd meant every one of them.
"Someday, when Renegade is gone, we can both have a family again..."
She blinked bashfully, again knowing what she said.
"I do find it truly awful PewterClan has been invaded...Where are they staying? And worse yet, Renegade's not done! I always swore he was only out for PewterClan...I suppose Cannonecho and his sister must be alluring to kill for their uncle."

Blinking slightly as she spoke, Zane grimanced slightly, eyes full of sorrow for her. His own family had been slaughtered by his father. He knew of the pain it cuased, and he had only been a kit at the time, before running off, only to return later to kill his father. At least Melody hadn't been robbed of all her family.
"At least your nephew is OK." Zane said softly, eyes glowing slightly.
"I have known the same fate for my family, although nothing matters now. I never knew them, only you ever played a part as a family member." It felt suprisingly good to have someone he could turn to, as if being alone all those years had damaged him more then he had known, the wounds had just been hidden under the surface of everything. It didn't matter if he only had Melody, he wanted nobody else in this world.
Tail flicking her ears, an amused look gleamed slightly in Zane's eyes, creating a warmer look then their usual glow. There was always two sides to every mask. If one had the tools, both could be viewed. For now, the two sides were open. It was amazing what could happen some days.
"That would be nice. To have a family togethor."
As she addressed PewterClan though, Zane's thoughts turned from the happy thoughts of family, to the darker thoughts of battle.
"I have become allies with Goldstar and his clan, and I must say, their ways are fascinating. Nothing I would ever want to do, but still fun to watch. They are lving in the loner meadow right now, in the barn. None of the loners have been hostile that I know about, they are usually really good at keeping to themselves. I heard that Lillydale has already left, she reunited with her long lost friend Fallingflame. I don't know anything about them aside from that, and Cannonecho is someone I haven't met before. I pity them though, as the pain they must be feeling is horrid. I do know though, that Renegade wishes to kill the both of them. For 'being favorites' it seems."

((What? I play Lilydale...I don't recall her leaving...Did I make her go away? Lol.))
Melody brushed away the feeling of darkness that caused her a brief shiver.
"Yes, Foreshadow's alright. For now...He's agreed to come down to our area in about four suns. He had some unfinished business to attend to."
A warm glow struck her eyes, a smile playing on her lips.
"Our family...Does it not taste good to your tongue? I haven't said that since I was a kit. And can you imagine our children? Brave as you, but touched by your gentle side...I can see it now. You'll make the most wonderful father!"
Melody hadn't personally met Cannonecho either, but in a long ago talk with Warheart she knew he was most fond of his son and daughter. If only some of his graces had touched his cold-hearted son. None of this would be happening...
"What role can I play for you in this battle, my Zane?"

Wordlessly, Zane nodded. He wouldn't mind meeting the one Melody called 'Foreshadow.' He was not a social cat, true, but this cat striked some curiousity into the tom. How had this cat escaped the slaughter nearly all the rest of the family had gone through?
"I will have to meet him."
As she began to speak of their family, it was as if the dark thoughts just blew away, replaced by the warmer thoughts of their kin, their own family. It was something new for him, but not at all unenjoyable to him. In fact, it was as though everything had been pushed away.
"Not to mention your determination and strong will. They will be a handful, but we should be able to handle them. I haven't thought of a family ever since I was a kit as well. I never had a reason to actually. It feels so different then the usual grim thoughts I have about the future."
Zane had not been in the area when Warheart was still alive, although he knew the basic story. Renegade had never been the favorite, and everyone was paying the price for it. Oh well, there was no grudge to be held there. Aside from the crazy circuits, nobody could predict what could happen in the future.
"While I am battling with Renegade, I will need someone to keep with the other rogues who are allied with me. I do not think they will be any problem, but they will still need a leader. I also need a second for my band." Zane said, obviously having thought everything up, down to the very pinpoint of what could go wrong. It was only the battle with Renegade that remained in question.
"And please, do not get yourself killed." The tom added, with a shiver. He could not get her back just to loose her again. He could see that she wouldn't leave him, and respected her wishes. However, it would not end well if she were to fall.

Melody pushed her thin head under Zane's chin, purring.
"Zane, I am loyal to you but I cannot be a second in command. I don't think I have it in me to do what you do...I can fight, but I've never been the best of leaders. I'm a queen and warrior at heart and I always will be. When Foreshadow has arrived he can help you with battle tactics. He fought the rogues some time ago for the clans when HawkTalon battle them. He's a wanderer really, he's been with Warheart and now you, but he never really does go for a permanent home....I'll even have to invite him back sometime to train our kits! I imagine they'll be quite annoying...I know I was, as a kit!"
She purred once more, a laugh hidden behind her voice. So many memories she had, yet all of them ended badly....
She shivered again.

Zane smiled slightly as she rubbed against him, for once enjoying contact with a different cat.
"I know." He said soflty. He had already gussed what she would say, and he found he didn't mind. He had always felt that Melody was different then the other rogues he was around, maybe that was one of the reasons he had always been so easy around her, even in the beginning. He was more then different as a rogue then most thought, and being different often meant being alone. Yet, it could also draw some togethor, as he had found Melody.
"I have several of the ones who fought when Masquerade was around against him as well. It is good to have such a strong group. I can relate with him though, for the wandering. Until I came here, I was the same way. How long I stayed was judging on how long taking down the cat who had gone insane took. At first, I wondered what had made me stay, although I don't anymore." He said with a faint laugh.
"Oh yes. It would be good to pratice mass attacks with him on the kits. The more traning they get the better. It is going to be challenging to watch them." Kits were always rebellious, their kits would be worse then the usual, with the fiery spirit of the two cats running strong in them.
"I can't remember much about my kithood though. Nothing good other then the fact I was always independent and fiery."
How come it was always the darker stuff that stayed, not the good? Rubbing slightly against her as Melody shivered, he felt as though she knew what he was talking about, only in her own past.

Melody gave a yawn.
"I've been walking days to get to you. Even at night I never did stop...That's why it'll take my nephew awhile to get here."
A seemingly cold voice broke her words, though it was obvious the voice meant no danger. "No it won't. I'd not leave you alone as easily as you thought, Melody."
A pair of gray-blue eyes broke the darkness, and Foreshadow stepped from the shadows. "I've let you think you had walked alone, but followed you the whole time. I had to keep you safe, for the cat you were in a hurry to meet..." Foreshadow glanced cautiously at Zane, before walking to meet them. "I hope I wasn't interrupting anything too romantic, but it's started to rain outside." His smile broke his usually monotonous voice.
Melody grinned broadly. "Oh Foreshadow, when will you ever stop being so boorish? Zane's going to think you a boring lunatic! To ever think I suggested you helping the kits.... Oh no! I've only realized he know's you but you don't know him....Zane, this is Foreshadow. My Nephew."
She purred again and flicked her tail, begging them to meet.
